The Information Technology Center (ITC) offers various services such as Education Campus-wide Computing Service (ECCS) related services, distance education and conference support, as well as support for creating electronic teaching materials.
ECCS is the computing system for computer education and education using computers.
The Information Education Building has PC rooms for lectures as well as for self-study where students can use the terminals freely. It is also open on Saturdays and Sundays. The College of Arts and Sciences manages the Information Education Building and also sets the opening and closing schedule for the building. Please refer to the web page for the Information Education Building for more details.
A UTokyo Account issued to all students so that information systems related to education at UTokyo, such as ECCS and UTAS, can be used. However, in order to use ECCS with a UTokyo Account, students are required to take the “ECCS Online New User Information Seminar” (the seminar) organized by the ITC. If professors are going to use ECCS on the first day of class, they should instruct students to take the seminar beforehand, as the right to use ECCS will be granted one hour after completing the online seminar. Research students and auditors are allowed to take the seminar if certain conditions are met. Please note that the ECCS Online New User Information Seminar is offered during the orientation for first year students after matriculation.
Minimal Information Ethics and the rules of use can be learnt through the ECCS Online New User Information Seminar.
Please refer to the Educational Campus-wide Computing System Users' Handbook on how to use ECCS. The printed version of the ECCS Users' Handbook is distributed to all new first year students.
ECCS System Support Assistant (Tutors) are present (but not always) in the self-study rooms and near ECCS terminals in the libraries to answer general questions related to the system. Please visit the Tutors Website for details.
Please visit the ECCS website for details on ECCS. Academic and administrative staff can apply to obtain an ECCS account. It usually takes around a week to issue the account after applying. Please apply for an ECCS account well in advance if you would like to use ECCS for coursework.

The “Information Session on How to Use the System” is held before the start of the S1 and A1 terms for academic staff and teaching assistants (TA).
To book PC classrooms in the Information Education Building (Komaba), please contact the Academic Affairs Office of the College of Arts and Sciences. PC classrooms in the ITC (Hongo) can be booked through the corresponding website. Please contact the administration office affiliated with the distributed terminal rooms for more details.
Wireless LAN (IEEE802.11b/a/g/n) is available in some classrooms.
There is a distance education room equipped with a video conference system which can be connected to remote areas in room E49 on the 4th floor of the Information Education Building at Komaba Campus to support distance education. You can give lectures, conduct training sessions and research meetings via the Internet.
We provide support in creating teaching materials for e-learning and streaming distribution. The ITC Educational Resource Lab in room E47 on the 4th floor of the Information Education Building on Komaba Campus can be used for video editing as well. Please contact us if you would like to use video streaming or live streaming.
“ITC-LMS” (Learning Management System) allows support for coursework by providing functions such as course materials distribution, collection of reports, online quizzes, etc.
The “Lecture WWW server”, is a server for distributing course materials. A wiki is available for use on this sever. The HWB Project, as well as course materials distribution in English and Spanish are also supported.
We also provide a MailHosting service which allows you to check emails by accessing it through web browsers or on your mobile phone.
“WEB PARK 2014” is a web hosting service available for use by those affiliated with the university such as committees, departments, and laboratories.
We also hold seminars on how to use computers and networks. The seminar schedule will be posted on the ITC web site.
When you plan to give a class using ECCS, please be sure to check beforehand whether ECCS’s hardware and software can be used for your class. Details of the system are described in the ECCS Users' Handbook
iMacs are provided as ECCS terminals. Users can select either a Mac OS X EI Capitan (10.11) or Windows 10 environment at startup. Please note that the ECCS terminals are different from ordinary Mac OS and Windows computers. Security measures have been taken so that an unspecified number of people can use them safely.
Loaning or transferring an account is a breach of the Terms of Service of ECCS. (If you steal someone’s account, you will be subject to criminal penalty by the “law relating to computer-related crimes such as unauthorized access to computer systems”.) Please be aware that academic and administrative staff are not exempt from this law.
The usage environment for academic & administrative staff is slightly different from that of students. There are some of administrative tools which students cannot execute, while academic and administrative staff have the ability to do so.
If you have forgotten your password, you must request to have it reissued (Reference: If you have forgotten your password. If students must use a computer while taking your class, it is recommended to instruct them to check beforehand whether they can log in to ECCS terminals without problems.
There is an upper limit on the size of a single email, as well for individual inboxes, and the overall capacity of files that can be held in the file server. Therefore, you need to confirm whether your class/lecture can be done without exceeding the upper limit of these restrictions. (Reference: Limits - Chapter 18, pp.61 the ECCS Users' Handbook)
Printing is charged per page. You can pay for it with pre-paid printer cards or e-money cards (Suica and PASMO etc.). Pre-paid cards are sold at the UTokyo CO-OP.
We have not set a limit on the default scope of disclosure on the lecture WWW server. Therefore, please pay sufficient attention to the copyright laws (when you publish teaching materials on the web, the exceptional rule of copyright applied to educational institutions cannot be used).
Even when publishing a student's report on the web, staff must obtain the appropriate acknowledgement of the copyright.
When giving students assignments such as creating a web page using the "user web page publication WWW server", please ensure that they fully recognize the risks of publishing information. Needless to say, when choosing “self-introduction" as the material to practice publishing information, it may cause the student’s privacy to be violated and the faculty may have to take responsibility for such occurrences. Also, as there may be students who do not agree with the Guidelines for Information Ethics and Computer Use, it may be necessary to prepare other assignments that do not use the user web page publication WWW server.
All students will have been taught the minimum of information ethics and usage rules, but faculty should warn them as necessary. Regarding information ethics violations, we delegate handling of such issues to the Chief Information Security Officer. We also provide video streaming of the “Information Ethics Digital Video Collections" for students through the on-campus network for faculty to make use of.
Nearly 30,000 users share resources such as networks and file servers etc. on ECCS, so please refrain from imposing a heavy load on the system. If there is a possibility of a substantial load being applied to the system through your coursework, please consult the ITC beforehand.
When attempting to solve a network programming problem, please avoid using processes which may target you as suspicious or as trying to perpetrate an attack, such as a port scan. Please contact us in advance before using such processes.
Some files cannot be printed due to font-related problems. When sending print jobs, please confirm that the file can be printed with the ECCS multifunction printer and select which application to print it with.
